Seversky P-35

The Seversky P-35 was the first all-metal monoplane Pursuit plane with a rotary engine and retractable landing gear operated by the USAAC.  Per reference [8] it took its first flight on 15 August 1935 and entered active service with the US armed forces in 1937.  In addition to the USAAC, 60 export versions of this type of aircraft were sold to Sweden, which were designated EP-106 by Seversky ot J-9 by the Swedish Air Force.  In the lead up to the United State's involvement in WWII the US government eventually banned the sales of additional aircraft overseas to most countries other than the UK, but eventually did transfer six air craft to Ecuador as well as transferring some ex-USAAC aircraft to the Phillipine Airforce as USAAC squadrons in that country transitioned to P-40 type aircraft.  A total of 196 aircraft of this type aircraft were built in addition to a navalized prototype called the NF-1 which competed against the F2A and early F4F designs for a US Navy contract.

The landing gear retracted straight back into faired housings that extended below the wing, and the aircraft also had a "plexiglass: razorback configuration aft the cockpit, as shown below, somewhat similar to the configuration on the Brewster F2A/239/339 design.

As shown in the images below distinguishing features of this aircraft including;

In order to try and better develop weight estimating relationships an effort has been made to estimate the length of the fuselage aft of the firewall, and the length of the engine section forward of the firewall based off scaled drawings.  Together these two distances add to a term called the "structural length" and do not consider any portion of the engine or propeller shaft the extend foward of the fuselage/cowling, or any empennage that extends aft of the fuselage structure.  The drawing below shows the current best estimate of these dimensions obtained from available drawings of the airplane and will be updated with any real world data that becomes available.  For any aircraft with an inclined firewall, an attempt has been made to locate an approximate center of this location.
